Introduction to Information Visualization
  • We live in a visual information culture.
  • 40% of people respond more to visuals than to text. Visuals are processed 60,000x faster in the brain than text. 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual.

The goal of visualizing information is to reveal the intricacy of the world in uncomplicated terms that are simple to comprehend. Other than that, information design seeks to add knowledge to the information it displays through spatial, quantitative, and chronological relationships.

This infographic shows Charles Minard's 1869 chart of the number of men in Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign army, their movements, as well as the temperature they encountered on the return path.

TASKS

Exercise 1: Quantify and Visualize Data

Fig. x.x Grouping
For this exercise, I went to the offline class and was given sets of legos and buttons to pick from, which we were supposed to organize as a collection of data later on. I picked this one set of legos and grouped them by the number of studs on each piece.

Week 1 Task (Motion Graphic)

Recommend 3 Professional Motion Graphics.

1. What happens to your brain during a migraine - Marianne Schwarz
Fig x.x Motion Graphic #1
The first piece of motion graphics that I picked is an explanation video. I personally like this motion graphic because of how neat and simplistic it is. This motion graphic has very few words in it yet is very informative since the visuals are very clear.

2. The myth of Loki and the deadly mistletoe - Iseult Gillespie
Fig x.x Motion Graphic #2
The second motion graphic video that I picked is more about storytelling and as can be seen, the animations are a lot more complicated and advanced. I personally love how the artist creates depth in this 2d motion graphic and the transitions from each scene to another and how everything is connected, meaning no sudden or harsh cuts. I also love how the artist uses complementary colors as their color scheme for this motion graphic.

3. Nature's fortress: How cacti keep water in and predators out - Lucas C. Majure
Fig x.x Motion Graphic #3
The third motion graphic I picked is also an explanation video and the animations are more simple. But what I love about this particular motion graphic is the art style and how everything looks hand-drawn. I personally think this is a good motion graphic video because they were able to deliver the information very well and clearly through the visuals.

Exercise 2 : L.A.T.C.H

In this exercise, we were assigned to organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles (min. 4 out of Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy).

Visual Research
Fig x.x Visual Research
For this design, I followed what Ms Anis suggested. I wasn't familiar with pokemon but I figured there were so many options to choose from and with the help of my friends, I was able to understand the system and groupings of the pokemons better so I decided to use pokemon. I did some research on the website that was given and I picked the Johto Region.

Fig x.x Visual Research
I then searched for some floating island references as the setting and base of the poster.

Design Process

Fig x.x Sketch
I first sketched out my idea of the floating island as the setting to indicate the location of the pokemons.

I then finalized my illustration and moved it to Illustrator where I added the pokemon illustrations I took from the internet as well grouping them based on L.A.T.C.H.

Final Outcome
Fig x.x Final Outcome of LATCH exercise
I grouped them based on the location which is the Johto Region, where each the pokemons are usually found in, forest, town, river, or garden, pokemon types which is category, and the hierarchy of evolutions of each pokemons.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

Experience: All the exercises and lectures have taught me a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of doing these tasks despite some struggles. At this time I had quite poor time management since I myself was still trying to adapt to the new environment and I also had to deal with other accommodation problems as well. But I learned a lot and it was very exciting for me to learn a new way of organizing a collection of data, particularly using the L.A.T.C.H,

Observation : I see that organization plays a big role in creating a good design.

Findings: I find that the layout and composition in the design affect a lot on organization and visibility of the elements and grouping.
