INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

Visual Research

In this task, we were assigned to make a sticker. We were asked to pick a greeting and I picked "Happy Earth Day" because to be exactly honest I like the earth tone color scheme. Also, the word "happy" and "earth" has the same amount of letters, therefore a more balanced and fuller look on the squared-sized sticker later on. Also, I rarely see a "happy earth day" sticker that I like so I want to make one :') Plus earth day is basically every day so you can use the sticker any day.
Figure 1.1 Visual Research
I started out by searching for stickers inspirations on Pinterest relating to earth day and found these two stickers. I particularly love the style on the first design and color scheme. What i like about the second design is how they utilized some of the letters really well with earth-related graphical elements.

Sketches & Idea Exploration

Figure 1.2 Sketches
Figure x.x shows the sketches I made for this task. I made six different designs and in the first one, I elongated the 'h' in 'earth' and 'y' in 'day' and added leaves. The second design is similar but has different kind of leaves. The third design is a simple half-earth graphical element and the phrase in all upper case with exclamation mark. The fourth design is meant to look like a globe by elongating the 'h' in earth and adding earth graphical element behind it. The fifth design is similar to the second one, but i added some drop-like elements to fill in the gaps. The last design is a simple earth graphical element in the background and the words 'happy' and 'day' warped following the round earth shape.

Digitization

Figure 1.3 Rounding the corners
First I tried out several typefaces to see which suits best to my design. I finally decided on Futura Std Bold. I then arranged the words so it fits well in a square dimension. I then rounded the corners to give it a softer and more fun look.

Figure 1.4 Shaping the leaves
I continued on by making the leaves using the pen tool and attaching it to the 'y' in 'day' and 'h' in 'earth.

Figure 1.5 Adding more elements and color
I then added some drop-like elements to fill in the negative spaces between the words using the pen tool. When I showed the sketches to Mr. Vinod, he said the drop-like elements I added to fill in the gaps look like water. So this was my first attempt on coloring, I tried to make it look like water and used blue. I also created an outline on the words and added Taylor's logo.

Figure 1.6 Color Process
After several attempts at coloring, I ended up with three slightly different versions. The first one is all green except the 'earth' which is brown. In the second design, the colors are the same but I used gradients on both words 'earth' and 'day'. The third one was similar to my first attempt where the drops are blue and the rest are different shades of green.  I also added a white background with a green outline using the pen tool.
Figure 1.7 Color Process
I also changed the Taylor's logo all according to the colors of the drops. I also created a half-leaf shape using the pen tool and added gradient in it to create more depth on the leaves.

Sticker Process
Figure 1.8 Sticker Process
I exported my final versions and make them a sticker using the @stickers bot on telegram. I downloaded telegram on my laptop so I can directly upload the file instead of the image.

Before Feedback

After Feedback

Figure 1.11 Final outcome after feedback

Mr Vinod said everything looks good except the Taylor's logo because it can't be seen clearly. He suggested I put the logo under the big green leaf or just somehow figure it out so it's more visible. I tried putting it under the leaf but it didn't look good in my opinion, the overall figure/shape looks odd. So i decided to put it in the same place and color it using a gradient similar to the gradient in 'earth' but the opposite way.

Animation

Figure 1.12 Animation Process
I then exported the ai file and imported it to After Effects. I then animated every drop element to make it look like it comes out of the word 'earth'. I created a before and after keyframes and adjusted the scale, position, as well as the rotation. I positioned the drops in the word 'earth' and scaled the drops from a very small size on the first keyframe and to the original shape on the last keyframe.

Figure 1.13 Animation Process
I also animated the Taylor's logo to make it seem like it appeared from the bottom by adjusting the position, scale and opacity. I created another keyframe in the end and adjusted the position to make it look like it sort of bounced.

Lastly, I selected all keyframes and put easy ease in so the movement doesn't look too stiff.

FEEDBACK

Week 11
Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod told me what I'm doing is already okay but maximize the space given and try to minimize the graphical elements.

Week 12
Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod said my sticker already looks good but the Taylor's logo isn't very visible, so he suggested putting the logo under the bottom left leaf and maybe add more leaf in the previous place so it's not empty. But if it doesn't work out, he told me to figure it out so the logo can be seen more clearly.

REFLECTION

Experience: To be honest I thoroughly enjoyed doing this project as I was excited about making a sticker because I have never made a sticker on telegram and other messaging apps let alone an animated version of it as well. So I'm happy that I get to learn this. I learned a lot throughout this process including learning more about After Effects because I've only ever used the software once.
Observation: I see that making a sticker is a lot harder than it looks. It has to be simplified enough so it's readable and can be seen clearly as a sticker and gets the message across.
Findings: I find that I appreciate stickers more because I have never thought anything about the stickers i come across in my life before and now I realized that there's a lot of thought process and digitalizing process behind it to reach the final outcome.

  • Writing
    • Writing emphasizes quick communication and execution above appearance.
    • The ability to write well, in terms of aesthetics as well as articulateness, was regarded as an integral part of literacy and education
  • Lettering
    • Lettering differs from handwriting in that its main focus is usually on technique and visual appearance.
    • More than it does in writing and type, context influences the way lettering looks. The uniqueness of each lettering treatment allows its designer flexibility and creativity to respond to a given context in very specific ways.
    • Letters can be compressed, warped, or interlocked to fit a particular space.
    • Lettered or written characters that can be reproduced and rearranged become type.
  • Type
    • Type unites the detail and formality of lettering with the speed and ease of handwriting.
    • Type’s strength and beauty lie in its ability to look the same in any context
    • Type also constitutes a system of powerful relationships, which transform a palette of shapes into a true kit of parts capable of endless recombinations. Like any set of tools, type has power that is measured not just by individual elements but also by how the parts work together
