LECTURES
Visual Analysis- Is a design approach that emphasizes visual elements and concepts.
- It is a description and explanation of visual structure for the sake of it in its most basic form.
- Visual analysis, on the other hand, may be used to better understand how the formal aspects of a design transfer ideas, information, or meaning, as well as to recognize the design decisions made by the designer.
- Visual literacy, or the capacity to interpret and critically assess images at a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news, includes visual analysis.
Phase 1: Observation
Phase 3 : Interpretation
Observation
- Observation is the process of attentively observing and recognizing the visual characteristics of a design in order to correctly describe them. To put it another way: Before you go, don't read anything about it.
- The observation step includes seeing, thinking, and choosing appropriate words to communicate what you've noticed.
- Analysis necessitates thinking about your observations and attempting to create assertions about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
- Consider how the many visual elements you've discovered fit together to make a whole, as well as how that whole affects the viewer.
- What is it about the work that catches your attention, and why? Use everything you've learned about Design Principles over the previous several weeks to create something new
Phase 3 : Interpretation
- In this last step, you integrate your observations, descriptions, and analyses of the work with information about the design work (and, in some cases, the designer) and historical context that you find in credible public sources.
- What is the significance of the design? What was the point of making it in the first place?
INSTRUCTION
TASK
Figure 1.1 Untitled Piece by Matthew Sorgie
I think this artwork represents the current system of our education that
affects students' mental health. I noticed that tt can be seen through the
pills the artist has drawn referring to ways of handling students' mental
health caused by the system of education. A system that sets unrealistic
expectations on what the students should be able to achieve at such young
ages. I think it's clear that the pills is the main focus and message of
this whole design, and it could mean literally and can also be a way to
symbolize unhealthy ways students do to handle their mental issues created
by the pressure of education and society to always perform good to be able
to 'succeed'.
Figure 1.2 Analysis
Analysis
It's clear that this artwork shows harmony in the sense of colors. There
is also balance from the equivalence of elements on each side. In this
artwork, movement can also be seen from what I highlighted with red,
which are the dotted lines indicating the movement of the paper
airplane. The papers falling down also adds to the movement. There are
also symbols in this artwork that can be seen from what I highlighted in
blue, which symbolizes mental health issues. The more vibrant color on
the hands really draws the eye in to attract attention to what the
hand is doing, which leads to the pills, and which sends the main
message in this whole design. The grades are also an important aspect of
this design which were put by the artist, filling up the negative space
fully and even partly out of frame using a more vibrant color than the
colors used in the whole design as well. This whole artwork has caught
my attention as a student, mainly because it is very relatable, it is a
worldwide matter experienced by a lot of other students caused by the
pressure of the education system, and it is represented by him writing
the words 'f*ck the system' over and over again. Though his expression
looks 'normal', because this relates to how society views mental health
as well. Society often underestimates the importance of mental health
and even some saying it doesn't exist, so people with mental health
issues tend to hide it, afraid to speak up, afraid of being judged by
society. Lastly, the angle of the person in this design is shot from a
very dynamic pose to show how dramatic this situation actually is and
how it is often underlooked.
Interpretation
The artist made this artwork to send a message about the current
education system affecting students' mental health. That intelligence is
often determined by a number, competitive learning, standardized
testing, it's all detrimental to the fundamentals of education and the
success of a collaborative learning community. The abuse of Adderall by
high school and college students is skyrocketing as the pressure to
constantly perform at high-level rises, not to mention the boom in
anxiety and depression among teens. The system that is created makes
happiness an afterthought and burnout of an endless cycle. So it is an
artwork to lift viewers that relates to this artwork the most, who are
struggling to achieve the unrealistic expectations set for them, to be
confident in who they are, and never let numbers define them.
Design Process
I feel like the piece by Matthew Sorgie I did my visual analysis on
isn't really direct on sending the message about how the students
actually feel, So I wanted to create a piece that directly represents
the feeling and the situation for students with mental health issues
caused by the current education system.
Visual Research
Figure 1.3 Visual Research
I looked up some artworks related to mental health issues and this
piece really caught my attention because of how simple and accurate
this piece is and how it gives you the actual feeling, especially from
the brush strokes and the colors used in this piece. And so I was
inspired to do my piece with a similar color scheme.
Sketches and Idea Exploration
Figure 1.4 First Sketch
First I sketched out my idea and my first idea was to do someone getting
sucked by some kind of black hole in the back but then I changed my mind
because I don't think it represents the feeling very accurately.
Figure 1.5 Sketch
So then I decided to do a person drowning instead because depression
feels like drowning. I also added some elements relating to
education/school since the current system is the main cause.
Figure 1.6 Progress Video
Figure 1.6 shows the whole process of the execution as well as my
thought process and idea exploration behind it.
Figure 1.7 Progress
After sketching, I continued on by coloring the face and hand with
dull colors almost corpse-like with redness in certain areas. I also
used the golden ratio as the base of the composition in this design.
Figure 1.8 Progress
I then added some words like "Do better", "mental", "issues" on the
wave and lowered the capacity down. Plus, I decided to add some wet
strands of hair on the hands.
I then added a stopwatch to indicate the time counting down to deadlines
of assignments, but then I saw that it didn't really fit with the whole
design, so I ended up writing "tick tock" instead, indicating the same
thing.
Figure 1.10 Progress
I also wrote "Are you ok?" with the "yes" box ticked and added drops of
blood on the paper, also an "F" on the other paper to show bad grades.
Figure 1.11 Words
There's a total of 4 writings on the waves which are "Mental", "issues",
"Tick Tock", and "Do better"
Animation Progress
I imported the layers to after effects and adjusted every layer as well as putting audio behind it (Billie Eilish - "Everything I Wanted" muffled). I also ended up adding the lyrics because the center part looked pretty empty.

Title : Suffocated
The current education system has created immense pressure on students to
always perform great and while having unrealistic expectations set for
them. Not to mention the mindset that is created about their intelligence
that it is determined only by their grades. This has caused a significant
matter to their mental health. This artwork is a representation of the
actual feeling and the situation of students with mental health issues
that are caused by the current education system. The feeling of depression
is similar to the feeling of drowning, the current so strong it pulls them
under. People around them saying "Do better!" while at that point they
were only trying to keep their nose and mouth above the water. On the
outside, they look fine and okay and that is because most people with
mental health issues tend to stay silent and are afraid to seek
help.
More explanation:
In this artwork, movement is emphasized as can be seen by the
waves. Golden ratio is used as the base of the composition in this
design. Harmony in colors is also seen as well as
words on image. The paper with "Are you ok?" written on it and the
'yes' box ticked, is to indicate how most people with mental health issues
are afraid to speak up about their situation because society often looks
down on mental health. The same paper also has some blood on it that
indicates nosebleed from being overworked and tired, so this part
represents stress. The other papers has writing that usually drags
them down, including the "F" which indicates bad grades. There are a total
of four writings which are "Do better" "Mental" "Issues" and "Tick Tock"
on the water. "Do better" is often said to students that are 'failing'.
"Tick Tock" is to indicate the time counting down to deadlines of
school work and assignments and so it represents anxiety. As for
the overall design which shows person drowning, represents
depression. Lastly, the colors that are used for the skin are pale
indicating lifelessness, and red on certain areas like the nose to show
that it has inhaled some of the water and that they are struggling to stay
on the surface to breathe.

FEEDBACK
Dr Charles said that it looks brilliant and that this is exactly how I should
do it, by discovering gaps and what is not addressed in current designs
because it gives the purpose.
REFLECTION
Experience
I thoroughly enjoyed doing this final project because mainly we were given the
freedom to create anything as a response to the work we did our visual
analysis on. I did experience some problems and struggles in finding the idea
and the reason for that is mainly because I was busy thinking and doing other
final projects as well. But despite all that, I did learn a lot and I'm very
grateful that I get to learn about visual analysis and making my own design as
a response.
Observation
I see the importance of observing and analyzing as well as interpreting a work
of design in order to create a design as a response to it.
Findings
I find that there is a lot more to one's work as I caught myself observing
thoroughly every detail and analyzing it to figure out the artist's purpose
and interpretation of the design.

Very nice play of space and good effort in foreshortening the hand though the perspective can be a bit more exaggerated but its very good! Well done overall for your diligence and hardwork! Always keep this spirit!
