LECTURES

Surrealism VS Realism
Realism
  • Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality".
  • Almost always takes a non - exotic and non - extraordinary subject matter and theme.
  • There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real"
Figure 1.1 Realism

Surrealism
  • A twist on Realism.
  • Explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream - images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.
  • Surrealism defies logic.
  • Dreams and the working of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super - realism") filled with strange and images and bizarre juxtapositions.
  • Fueled by teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dada artist, surrealist like Salvador Dali promoted free association and dream imagery.
Figure 1.2 Surrealism

Dadaism
  •  An anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonessential in nature
  • Salvador Dali was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.

Double Exposure & Imaging Blending Mode
Refers to the merging of multiple images to make them surreal, emotional, or humorous.

Tilt-Shift Effect
  • Blur one of your photos instead of the entire image, or blur everything except for one important detail
  • Filter -> Blur Gallery -> Tilt-Shift

Fake reflection
  • With the help of a separate photo, merge it.

Experiment with simple portraits
  • Combining something plain with something complicated will give you a balanced result.
Figure 1.7 Result

Convert Result to Black & White

  • Lack of color may strengthen emotions in double exposure images.
  • Gives unique depth to the photography.

Figure 1.8 Converting to BNW

Work with silhouette
  • Catches eye and create unique composite images
Figure 1.9 Working with Silhouette

Pick 2 random photos
  • Result may create a story of their own
  • Shoot interesting textures, shapes and forms instead
  • Experiment!
Make objects look fascinating
  • Try to make objects look like something else
Use Shadow
  • Outlines of any kind are fantastic to work with for double-exposure photography

TASK

Final Project : Self-Titled

What is the Concept?
I’ve always had big dreams and a belief that I can be whatever I want to be when I grow up. I never really limit my dreams to just one specific thing, I dream of a lot of things. So even though I choose a specific path I’m going to follow, I’m constantly wondering what it would be like if I took a different path. Not that I don’t like the current path I chose, in fact, not at all, but I like and dream of a lot of other things and I want to be able to experience them too. But sometimes society led us to believe that it’s better to just focus on one path and be the best at it.

What is the message you want people to understand?
But I believe that it’s okay to not just do one thing. I feel like it’s okay to choose one path that we relate to the most while still trying to experience other things. We’re allowed to do so and so by having the courage to seek and take opportunities, we will be able to do that. So this poster is to encourage the viewers to always seek and take opportunities.

Motto/Quote:
"If your dreams don't scare you, they are too small."
"All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them."

Figure 2.2 Sketches
I made two sketches from my concept, but I ended up mixing them both.

Progress

Figure 2.3 Progress
First, I took photos by myself using a mirror because I wanted to include the camera in. Then I imported it to Photoshop and masked it and put it into a black background. I also made a glitch by duplicating the layer and adjusting the RGB colors in Blending options.

Figure 2.4 Progress
I continued by adding and arranging smoke photo and erasing some of the parts to make it flow the way that I wanted. I then changed the color to red by adjusting RGB colors in Blending options.

Figure 2.5 Progress
I put in a new picture of my head going sideways, masked it, color corrected it, as well as duplicating it to create the layering effect.

Figure 2.6 Progress
I also adjusted the RGB colors on the first layer so it matches with the whole glitch theme.

Figure 2.7 Progress
Lastly, I added moon pictures and masked it as well as lowering the opacity down to match with the whole design.

Animation Progress
Figure 2.8 Progress
Then I imported my PSD file to After Effects and adjusted the positions, opacity, rotation, as well as scale in every layer.

Figure 2.9 Progress
I then saved an audio and added it to the background.

Final Outcome
Figure 2.10 Final Outcome "Reverie"

Title : Reverie
/ˈrev(ə)rē/
'a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream.'

So this piece tells one thing about myself, that even though I'm following one path in life, I like to get lost in my thoughts, wondering of other paths and always looking for opportunities to experience other things because as I was younger I've always had a lot of dreams, never limiting myself to just one. I believe we’re allowed to do so and so by having the courage to seek and take opportunities, we will be able to do that.

The head going sideways represents me constantly wondering about other paths and looking for opportunities to experience other things, The camera represents what society led us to believe, which is to just "focus" on one path.

FEEDBACK

At first Mr. Martin didn't really see the photoshop work I did because it's too minimal. After adding more elements, he told me to look for composition moodboard on Pinterest and follow it.

REFLECTION

Personally, I was struggling to find ideas at first since surrealism is so broad, but I was glad we were given the freedom to create whatever represent ourselves or the message we want to deliver. I learned a lot, not only from the lectures but also in the process of doing the task. I'm also glad that we were not only taught to use Photoshop but After Effects as well to animate.
