Sense of PlaceThe importance of observation
- How does designer "know" what to visualize in an idea?
- Attentive to your surroundings
- Pay attention do details
- Biomimicry
- Looking at the nature and mimic them to create a design
Figure 1.1 Biomimicry
- be mindful to your surroundings
- Try something new
- Connect with nature and ignore distractions/disturbance
- Challenge yourself to a mental workout
- record what you observe
- Stay inquisitive
- Getting a sense of place with only visual aids
- How you express your sense of that place
- Documenting the observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

INSTRUCTION
TASK
Visual Research
Figure 2.1 Visual Research
Figure 2.2 Visual Research
I decided to browse through pinterest for some sense of place designs. I
found these two artworks from pinterest that I think capture the sense of
place pretty well. You can almost feel it, not only from the place
illustration itself, but also from the colors that are used. Both designs
that I found on Pinterest that took my attention were these two, because I
instantly get a strong feeling, sense of the place they were showing.
Idea Exploration
When we were assigned this task, I knew I wanted to do a place that holds a
place in my heart. A place that holds an unforgettable memory of mine. And so
I thought of three places. The first was in elementary school when I was on a
field trip going to Sea World. Specifically, the aquarium corridor where it
curves on top of your head?? (I'm not sure what it's called but it's on figure
2.3) I remember vividly being so amazed by it, almost felt like I was out of
this world (definitely not an exaggeration). I remember that it felt so
calming despite the loud chattering of people that were inside that corridor
too. After that trip I constantly begged my parents so we could go back to
that place again.
Figure 2.3 Inspiration #1
The second place is inside the car, with my head outside the window and
feeling the wind. Not a particular time or moment but I loved doing that
when I was little although my mom always pulls me back in because it's
lowkey dangerous and that I would also get sick if i keep doing that :') But
I really loved the sensation.

So I thought of another place that holds a special place in my heart. I
feel like not the place itself that makes it memorable but also the memory
in that place. I love going to concerts or festivals. I love enjoying the
music and the singers singing live. The sound system is crazy and you can
really feel the vibrations physically if you're close to the stage, and
there's something magical about that (despite the smell of sweats lol,
because the closer you are to the stage, the more packed it is). And I
feel like I have the most fun in concerts or festivals because I get to
really let myself go and enjoy the music. So I'm not gonna lie, it's
pretty sad that the pandemic happened because the festivals and concerts
that i was really looking forward to that year got canceled.

Sketches
Figure 2.6 First Sketch & Van Gogh's Starry Night
In the first sketch I wanted to do a girl's head coming out of the window of a
car, and I wanted to do sort of like Van Gogh's style to show the wind. But in
the end I decided to not go further with the sketch because I'm not exactly
sure if this portrays sense of place.
Figure 2.7 Second Sketch
In this sketch, I tried to make a silhouette of people's hands at festivals. I
picked a warm color for this because I want to show the heat that's felt in
this place, packed, full of people.
Process
Figure 2.8 Process Video
In the process video, it can be seen that I added the sparkles that indicate
music and positive energy flowing throughout the place.
Before Feedback
After Feedback
Lecturer told me to maybe add more value, and he suggested using 'Artivive'.
For instance, i could animate the sparkles.
Figure 2.10 Artivive
So I tried it out. I downloaded overlays from youtube for the special effects
that I was going to add. But for some reason, it didn't turn out the way I
wanted it to. It doesn't capture the feelings and senses I wanted to show. But
then I remembered seeing an app recommendation on tiktok called 'Mental
Canvas' where you can turn your 2D canvas into a 3D one. It's not exactly
animation, but I think this alternative works too.
Figure 2.11 Adding drummer and guitarist
Since I'm creating more depth and making it into a 3D piece, I added a drummer
and another guitarist at the background. You can't see it in the 2D but you
can see it in the 3D piece >:)
Figure 2.12 Mental Canvas
I downloaded it, watched some tutorial videos and I started making my 3D piece
by exporting every layer of my work and importing it to the mental canvas.
Then I adjusted every layer's depth and rotation so it looks 3D. Lastly, I
directed and adjusted the scenes I wanted to capture on the timeline and
exported it as a video.

Figure 2.15 Adding sound and overlay in iMovie
Latly I decided to add in an overlay and sound in the background using iMovie.
I used a small particles overlay and I used the song 'Sign of The Times' by
Harry Styles but muffled.

FEEDBACK
Dr Charles said it's pretty good, well-balanced composition, good emphasis on
the hands and balanced contrast. The illusion of depth is clearly seen too.
But maybe could add more value by using AR effect to view this work, maybe
animate the sparkles.
REFLECTION
Experience: For me, I struggled for a long time with getting ideas for
this task. I took me a lot of days to finally figure out what I wanted to
make. I learned a lot from the lectures and I also learned throughout the
process of my work. I get to learn about new apps like Artivive and also
Mental Canvas to create some 3D/AR pieces.
Observation: I see that sense of place is not about making the place
look realistic and literal (it could but it's not the main point) but about
being able to show a 'sense','feeling' of that place.
Findings: I found out about 2 new apps and both are really cool so
thank u for introducing me to artivive sir :')

excellent work! The layering work works well in creating the appeal, harmony, visual hierarchy and great sense of continuity!
