LECTURES

Week 5 - Rhythm and Movement

Figure 1.1 Rhythm and Movement
  • The sense of rhythm/flow and movement is created when the composition flows into a direction of a specific point.
  • Flow and movement help to narrate the illustration effectively by the use of visual hierarchy.

Chiaroscuro

Figure 1.4 Contemporary Media - Comics
Chiaro refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface (Chiaro = Bright, Scuro = Dark).

A lightning choice to:
  • Increase dramatic tension
  • Create sensational effect
  • Pull ones attention to a subject in an intense way
  • Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive space
  • Also a great study of form and value practice

INSTRUCTION

Task 2 : Decisive Moment
Think of a moment in time that changed a narrative for the better… or worse. Or a scene in a movie that turned the tide of the story. Or a particular part of a video game that made you rejoice or cry along with the character. Or a memorable chapter in your favorite book that made you return to read it again and again.

These are decisive moments that impacted a story and you as an audience. Whether the moments are based on real-life events or fictional narratives, human psychology is easily affected by moments like these. As a designer, you are to capture these moments and translate them into a single piece of animated artwork
  • You can use any known narrative from published media like movies, animation, books, comics, manga, etc
  • Capture the unique, fleeting, and meaningful moment of that time, ideally one involving movement and action.
  • Create a sophisticated background to the subject that interacts both visually and psychologically with the subject in a synergistically meaningful figure/ground relationship.
  • Exercise anticipation, ambiguity, and uncertainty of the moment as a visual gap, interval, or suspension of some kind through the animation loop.
  • Provide a logline to describe the moments, but not enough to reveal the whole story behind the picture.

TASK 2

Task 2 : Decisive Moment

1. Visual Research

I thought of three scenes from 3 iconic movies : The Shining (1980), Anne Of Green Gables (1985),  Corpse Bride (2005)

These are the scenes I thought of:
Figure 2.1 The Shining Scene
This is the scene where Danny bikes through the corridors and met the two twins and they flashed the bloody scene several times to Danny.

Figure 2.2 Anne Of Green Gables Scene
This scene is when Gilbert was trying to get Anne's attention by pulling one of her pigtail braids while saying "carrots!".

Figure 2.3 Corpse Bride Scene
This scene is when Victor goes to the woods practicing his lines for the wedding ceremony. He puts a ring to a tree branch that was actually a hand that belongs to Emily. Emily pulls his hand and reveals herself.

2. Sketches

Figure 2.4 Anne of Green Gables Sketch
I tried sketching out the scene from Anne of Green Gables, but it ended up being too complex, not minimalist enough for the poster. Also it's not exactly a decisive moment, it was just an iconic scene from the movie that I thought of.

Figure 2.5 The Shining Sketch
I also sketched out the particular scene I chose from the movie, and planned the animation out too. But then I'm not sure if it's a decisive moment either or just a very iconic scene.

Figure 2.7 Corpsee Bride Poster & Animation Sketch
Figure 2.6 Corpse Bride Sketch
I decided to go with Corpse Bride since it relates to the topic the most which is the decisive moment. Th is my original idea for the animation but I got pretty carried away. It got too complex and dynamic, hard to do in illustrator. So I ended up only taking the first few frames only.

3. Poster Digitalization

Figure 2.8 Poster Design Process #1

Figure 2.9 Poster Design Process #2

Figure 2.10 Poster Design Process #3
Started out by tracing my sketch with the pen tool and filling it with colors. I picked the color I wanted to use along the way and throughout the process.

Figure 2.11 Poster Design Result
I didn't wanna make it too detailed bc its a minimalist poster so I try to not add too much elements in it. Also it's easier to animate if there isn't a lot of elements.

4. Animation Process

Figure 2.12 All Artboards in Illustrator
I then started my animation process by creating every frame that is needed in Illustrator by tweaking my original poster. Ik my workspace is v messy :') but in the end, only 12 artboards were used on the final animation.

Figure 2.13 All frames in photoshop
I continued on by exporting every frame to photoshop and arranging them accordingly. I also added the tweening between certain frames (specifically when it goes dark). I added about 5 frames and set them to 0 seconds. Then I also adjusted the duration of each frame so it flows better and has a good timing of each event that happened in this animation. There's a total of 26 frames that I ended up with in photoshop.

5. Final Submission

FEEDBACK

Ms. Jennifer said the animation looks really good and the timing is great, but I forgot to put the log line. After putting the logline, I also asked for some feedback from Ms. Anis. She said that it's awesome and that the log line fits so it's overall good.

REFLECTION

Experience: I thoroughly enjoyed the process of doing this task because I love watching movies. It was a bit challenging to keep the poster minimalistic as I tend to be very detailed and perfectionist. But it was nice to learn something that I'm not very familiar with doing, as I was able to learn a lot of new things. I learned a lot, not only from Ms. Anis' lectures but also from the ones I learned whilst doing this task.

Observations: I see that doing animation is very time-consuming, especially if doing it frame by frame. I also see that minimalism may look easy because it is simple but it's really not. Simplifying an object  could be harder than doing it detailed.

Findings: I discovered a lot of new tools in photoshop in making animation.
