LECTURE
WEEK 2: Introduction to Composition
Introduction to Basic Composition
- Focal Point: A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.
Figure 1.1 Focal Point
- Scale and Hierarchy: Often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.
Figure 1.2 Scale & Hierarchy
- Balance the Elements: A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it. Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.
Figure 1.3 Balancing Elements
- White Space : White space is to balance up the main focus of a composition. White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.
Figure 1.4 White Space
Rule of Thirds
- The process of splitting an image into thirds using two horizontal and two vertical lines
- The fictitious grid is divided into nine sections, each having four intersection points.
- We can produce a more natural image when we position the important elements of our design in the intersection points.
Figure 1.5 Rule of Thirds
Rule of thirds is used to:
- Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye
- Creatively use negative space.
- Create conversation between the subject and background.
Figure 1.6 Rule of Thirds in Design
Golden Ratio
- is a mathematical ratio
- commonly foud in nature
- when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to eye
- creates and appreciaties a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion
- a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout

WEEK 3: Introduction to Photoshop
This week, Mr. Martin Introduced us to Adobe Photoshop and taught us
about Selection and Layering.

Selection
Selection tools
- Marquee Selection tool
- Pen tool
- Lasso tool
- Quick selection tool
Figure 1.10 Selection tools
Lasso Tool
- Lasso tool allows the user to free draw and pinpoint specific areas of an object.
- Great to use with graphic tablet because it's similar to drawing
- Different tool options:
- Lasso
- Polygonal Lasso
- Magnetic Lasso
Figure 1.11 Lasso Tool
Pen Tool
- most common option when creating a path from scratch
- the fewer the points, the smoother the path will be
- Variations of Pen tool
- Straight Line Paths
- U shaped curves
- Simple S curves
- Complex S curves
Figure 1.12 Pen tool
Layering
- Layers are different images stacked on top of each other.
- Together they form one final image.
- You can use layers for non-destructive editing
- Your adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original image.
- The layers contain all the extra information and/ or images you want to add to the original file.

PRACTICAL
WEEK 2 : Monday, 30/08/2021
Physical Collage
For our first task, we were assigned to use elements from a magazine
to arrange 3 compositions for our physical collage during our
practical session. We were told to prepare the materials from a week
before so I ordered two magazines on the internet because I don't
have any at my home. So in the two hours of our second week's
practical session I came up with these 3 compositions.
In this first composition, I wanted to create some sort of energy
coming out from the girl that is represented by the orange streaks.
I particularly picked orange because it's the complementary color of
the girl's suit so I feel like the colors would really work together
in a harmony.
Figure 2.2 Pre-composition #2
Figure 2.2 shows my second composition where I decided to experiment
more and get a little bit more wild with the elements and
composition, thus why I cut the letters that spells out 'wild'.
Putting the eye as the girl's face mainly because the iris has the
same color as the suit so it really goes well together well in my
opinion. I also moved the orange streak to accentuate the kicking
movement of the model's foot.
Figure 2.3 Pre-composition #3
In the third composition, it's a bit more simple and basic compared
to the ones before, mainly because I didn't have that much time to
create a more complicated piece with the practical session time
given.
We then received our feedbacks from Mr. Martin and we agreed on
using the second composition as my final piece.
Design Process
Figure 2.4 Process Video
I recorded the process of me making my final composition, but
unfortunately my phone died before I get to the part where I glue the
materials. In this video, I arranged the elements according to the
composition Mr. Martin and I agreed on. Then I decided to add a flower
on the bottom left corner and add a darker orange streak under the
original orange streak.
Figure 2.5 Final Outcome Physical Collage
Figure 2.5 shows the final outcome of my Physical Collage. I did add
more elements to kind of balance out the complexity. I also edited
the color out to a warmer tone and darken the shadows to create more
contrast.
WEEK 3 : Monday, 06/09/2021
Digital Collage
For our second task, we were assigned to create 3 compositions using
photoshop and the elements given by Mr. Martin. Mr. Martin also taught
us how to use the selection tools in Photoshop.

Pre-compositions
Figure 2.9 Composition #1
In this first composition, I wanted to create a design where it
looks like the people are lining up and that the orange circle in
the back looks like a sunset sun. To balance the rest of the
composition out, I added the fish tail at the bottom and inverted
the colors out. I also added the 'News flashes' part from the
newspaper to the top left corner.
Figure 2.10 Composition #2
In the second composition, my concept was in sort of like space
and planets setting. The vocal point of this composition is the
guy walking out of the door that is attached to one of the planets
and walking onto the road.
Figure 2.11 Composition #3
My third composition however, I wanted to do more of a design for
a sportswear advertisement. So I cropped the boy's body so it only
shows the lower part of the body so the viewers doesn't get
distracted by the boy and instead focus on the sportswear. I then
balanced the colors and composition out with several other
elements.
After the feedbacks given by Mr. Martin, we eventually decided to
go with composition #1 for my final piece, but I need to revise it
a bit before submitting.
Design Process
Figure 2.12 Revision Process
Figure 2.13 Revision Process
Figure 2.14 Revision Process
So I duplicated the guy in the middle and put it in 'luminosity' as
can be seen in figure 2.12, then flip them horizontally and
vertically. In figure 2.13, it can be seen that I also decided to
invert the colors of the 'New flashes' element, duplicate them, and
put them in 'darker color' as well as flipping them horizontally and
vertically. Lastly, I put a warming filter on top of the whole canvas
and set it to 27% as can be seen in figure 2.14.

FEEDBACK
Week 2: Mr. Martin and I agreed on using the second Pre-composition as my final piece for Physical Collage.
Week 3: Mr. Martin said composition number 1 & 2
for my Digital Collage has potential but doesn't feel quite
finished. But we decided to go with the first composition.
