LECTURE

WEEK 1:  Introduction

Today we began our first class with our lecturer, Mr. Martin. He briefly introduced us to the module he will be teaching us for the next few months, as well as our upcoming projects and exercises. Mr. Martin ended the session by giving us a few things that we need to do to get started on this module.

INSTRUCTION

PRACTICAL

WEEK 1 : Monday, 23/08/2021

1. Practice and play on the bezier game : https://bezier.method.ac/

We were given a game to play and practice using the tool given on the website. This game was pretty challenging at first but I think I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Overall, it really is a great website to practice using the pen tool.

2. Create your E-Portfolio blog.

3. Register Pinterest & Behance.

4. List down your 3 favorite graphic design works from Pinterest and explain why you like the designs.

Figure 1.1 Design #1

In this first design, I love that the colors used are very unexpected but do compliment each other very well. The vibrant neon orange from the artists' clothes also adds contrast to the whole poster, highlighting the main subject in this poster which is the band, without disrupting the overall color palette. Other than that, I also love the warp effect on the writing.

Figure 1.2 Design #2

What I love about this next design is the combination of 2d and 3d elements, the combination of cartoon elements and a real-life picture. I like the warm tone on the overall design as the color grading in the picture gives off an old retro feeling. Besides that, I also think the negative space in the bottom right is very smart as it immediately guides people's attention to the part where it has a lot of elements and I think that will interest people more to read what's on this design.

Figure 1.3 Design #3

The last design that I picked is a design to promote an artist's album. What I love about this design is the color scheme and specifically the font in the album title "Sanctuary" that kind of reminds me of the "Star Wars" and "Back to the Future" logo. I also like the composition in this design and the filter that's used in both pictures to fit the color scheme.

Photo Manipulation (Shazam)
In this exercise, we were assigned to put shazam into the hearst mansion background and color match it to look real. Mr Martin has provided us with a step by step tutorial on how to do photo manipulation, so I followed it and learned along the way.

Photo Manipulation Part 2

Figure 1.9 Picture of Myself
We were assigned to take a picture of ourselves and put it into the hearst mansion background. So I started out by taking a head to toe picture of myself in a plain background to make the selecting and masking easier. I purposely had the source of light from the left side so it matches the direction of light in the hearst mansion.

Figure 1.10 Masking
Then I selected using the quick selection tool and created a mask as well as applying it to the layer itself so it becomes one.

Figure 1.11 Adjusting and color matching
I then put the picture into the hearst mansion background and resized it. I matched the color by adjusting the luminance, color intensity, fade, brightness and contrast, and hue and saturation.

Figure 1.12 Adding Shadow
I added the shadow using a brush and added the gaussian blur effect on 3.8%. I also lowered the opacity of the shadow layer because it was too dark.

Figure 1.13 Adding reflection
Then I added the reflection on the water by flipping the image upside down and cutting the unnecessary parts using the pen tool to select, and creating a mask.

Figure 1.14 Adjusting reflection
Lastly, I adjusted and color matched as well as adding the gaussian blur effect on the reflection.

Recoloring Black and White

Figure 1.16 Original BNW Photo

In this particular task, we were assigned to recolor a black and white photo. We were given a step by step tutorial to learn and follow.

Figure 1.17 Recoloring Process
Following the tutorial given, the first thing I did was cover the face with a skin tone color using the brush tool. I then changed the blending mode to overlay. I also adjusted the hue and saturation, brightness and contrast, as well as color balance to make it more realistic. Then I repeated the steps on each layer for the hair, lips, eyes, and background. For these layers, I set the mode into soft light because it's looked more natural.
Figure 1.17 Layers
For the background, I first filled in the background with the color green, then selected the areas outside of the person first using the quick selection tool and made a mask.

Recoloring Black and White Part 2

Figure 1.19 Original BNW Photo & Reference photo

In this particular task, we were assigned to recolor a black and white photo. We were given a set of black and white portrait photos as well as a step by step tutorial to learn and follow. We were also told to find colored picture for the skin tone and hair color reference.

Figure 1.20 Creating swatches using color drop
I started out by cropping the reference picture with the Rectangular Marquee Tool and put it on the bnw photo. Then using the eyedropper tool, I made skin tone and hair color swatches.

Figure 1.21 Selecting Mask
I then continued following the tutorial which was selecting the hair part, using the quick selection tool. After that, using the refine option in the properties, I made the selection more neat and natural bye setting it to overlay and cleaning up the edges.

After making the selection neat, I set the blending mode to overlay

Figure 1.23 Adjustment layers
I then also adjusted the brightness and contrast, hue and saturation, as well as the vibrance so it looks a lot more natural. I also ended up using the other swatches as highlights and shadows which I put on using the brush tool.

Figure 1.24 Recoloring the rest
I repeated each of the steps and recolored the skin, lips, eyes, shirt, and the background.

After Effects Exercise
Figure 1.26 Progress
So I downloaded the PSD file given by the lecturer and imported it to After effects. Then I continued on by adjusting every layer's position, opacity, rotation, as well as scale. After I'm done, I also created a circle-shaped mask of the background and rotated it.
